Mt Xavier Pulls Off Pennant Upset
MT XAVIER is the new Ballarat District Golf Association division one pennant titleholder.
In an upset, Mt Xavier defeated the previously unbeaten Midlands 4-3 after the third extra hole in the final on Sunday.
Mt Xavier, which only just scraped into the finals in its last match, ends the dominance of Midlands, which had won the past three pennants.
The season decider went down to the match between Midlands’ Scott Coulter and Jason Slater with the final locked at 3-all.
Mildands appeared to have another title in its grasp when Coulter went two-up with just two holes in the 36-hole encounter to play. But Slater kept Mt Xavier’s hopes alive with wins on the last two holes, sending the match into a sudden death play-off.
With the title still on the line after two extra holes, Slater finally broke the deadlock. With Coulter in a bunker, Slater chipped onto the green and with two putts sealed the pennant for Mt Xavier. Midlands was in trouble early in the day.
Mt Xavier led 4.5 to 2.5 after 18 holes, with Mick Innes four-under and Darren Bowman nine-under.
Bowman continued his great form into the afternoon to defeat Chris Vanderhoost 11/9.
Craig Boucher shadowed that result for Midlands by beating Bevan Morton 8/7. Mt Xavier club champion Tim Steele got the better of Kyle Haase 7/6 and then Jeff Chandler rebounded for Midlands to outgun Steve Anderson 5/4. Midlands 15-year-old Corey Haase locked up the battle at three-all in a tense 2/1 win over Brad Hancock.
